How to prepare GINGER GARELU/ALLAM GARELU

GINGER GARELU/ALLAM GARELU/GINGER VADA is a festival special dish, in Navaratri season this dish is offered to Durga. Kids love this recipe, the taste is very yummy, since this are made with garlic it is very good for digestion problems. This dish observes very little oil, can be made with in few minutes and with very simple ingredients.

Ingredients needed:
(1 cup = 200grams)
  • → Urad dal (split white gram) - 1 cup
  • → Ginger - 1/4 cup
  • → Curry leaves - 1-2 bunches
  • → Coriander leaves- 1 bunch
  • → Cashew nuts (optional) - 10 numbers
  • → Cumin seeds - 4 teaspoons 
  • → Green chilies - 6 numbers
  • → Eno/baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon 
  • → Onions (optional) - 1/2 cup
  • → Salt to taste
  • → Water 

Preparation:

   1. Soak Urad dal for 2-3 hours.
   2. Take the blending jar, add urad dal, salt, blend them by adding teaspoon water into it, make it into nice tight batter and transfer into bowl.
   3. Add small pieces of green chillies, ginger (grated or small pieces), curry leaves, coriander leaves, salt, cashew nuts, onions, baking soda, mix well until the batter is aerated.
   4. Take a small ball put it in water if it floats on water that is the sign that batter is aerated.
   5. Take a plastic cover or cotton cloth dip it in water or sprinkle some water also wet your hands with water.
   6. Take a small portion of batter, put it on the cover, flatten it slightly then put a hole in middle, make couple of them 
   7. Heat the oil for deep fry, when the oil is hot, turn the flame into medium, drop one by one into oil, cook them until they turn into golden colour.
   8. Serve them hot as snack, breakfast or also as side dish.
   9. Finally the delicious dish is ready to enjoy. You can eat them directly or with peanut chutney, coconut chutney or allam chutney, sambar, with anything it goes yummy.

Tip of the day: If you are serving for kids grind the ginger along with urad dal so that they can enjoy this dish. When you are offering for goddess durga avoid onions. If you want to get soft garelu try to mix well until it is aerated.
